Abstract :

This case study discusses how the National Cancer Institute used Big Data, Apache Hadoop, and R to Analyze Cancer-Genome Relationships. This project won several awards, including the Government Big Data Solutions Award (best government big data project out of over eighty government big data projects), finalist for innovation, and ComputerWorld Honors Laureate for innovation.

Profile :
Tom Plunkett is a principal sales consultant with Oracle and teaches computer science courses for Virginia Tech’s computer science department. Tom is the lead author of Oracle Big Data Handbook and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Handbook and has authored several other books. Tom also volunteers for AtrocityWatch, a non-profit organization that uses big data for early detection of atrocities. Tom has spoken internationally at over fifty conferences on the subject of Big Data. Previously, Tom practiced patent law for the law firm of Fliesler Meyer, where he represented Oracle and other Silicon Valley companies. Tom has a B.A. and a J.D. from George Mason University, an M.S. in Computer Science from Virginia Tech, and has completed graduate courses in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford.
